Pixel 3 Review – Two Weeks Later

Hey, how’s it going? Dave2D here. So the Pixel and the Pixel 3XL, these have been my exclusive phones for the past couple of weeks Mostly the Pixel 3. I have a preference for the size I’d like the fact that doesn’t have a notch and I’ve put more time on this one than have on the XL But I thought I’d do a video that kinda talks about some things I liked about them some things that I really don’t like about them and Maybe help you decide whether or not you should get one So I like the size of the Pixel 3 a lot it actually feels way better in my hand And I thought it would the glass on the back does scratch very easily on the white It’s not as visible when you scratch it the color kind of masks the marks but on the dark colored version of the Pixel It’s actually quite visible. So this device with the Pixel stand is a great combination So when you put it on it charges wirelessly and it turns your phone into this quasi Google home It’s not as good as a regular Google home either Mini or Macs just because of the mic sensitivity, so normally on a regular Google home You can be quite far away from your device and it’ll pick up your voice but for whatever reason on either the phones either the XL or the regular you have to actually be quite close to the phone or Speak at a more elevated volume to be able to trigger the Google home functions Now that’s something that may be able to fix with software But right now I do have to speak at a abnormally loud voice to make these things work Something I noticed with the Pixel stand This is the only wireless charger that can charge the Pixel 3 or the Pixel 3XL at the full 10 Watts all the other Wireless charges have tried which is like 5 or 6 of them, can only hit slow wireless charging speeds It’ll say that it’s rapidly charging but it isn’t if you check the ampere that’s going through It’s quite low and I’m not sure if that’s something they can tweak the software again But right now you can only charge these things rapidly through the Pixel stand and that thing is like 80 bucks Which is pretty expensive for a wireless charger right now the speakers on these phones are good they’re stereo speakers again Like the Pixel 2XL that I had last year But these sound a lot better than the Pixel 2XL speakers Now the Pixel 3 like the regular Pixel 3 I think has a better speaker system than the Pixel 3XLnow This is louder. It’s definitely a louder speaker. But the speaker on the left or the speaker on the airfield runway is noticeably quieter than the speaker on the right and this might be something that wouldn’t bother most people if they’re just listening to something for like 5 or 10 minutes but if you’re watching a movie or if you’re going on a bender and watch Like a ton of music videos on YouTube and you’re using the Pixel 3XL it feels weird It’s like when you have headphones and one side is broken. So one headphone is louder than the other It’s just not a great experience. And this only exists on the Pixel 3XL on the regular Pixel 3 There is a noticeable difference as well if you listen for it But it’s not nearly as pronounced and even after using these for an extended period of time they never bothered me I spent more time with the Pixel 3 than the Pixel 3XL for the past couple of weeks My sim card has been in the Pixel 3 and I feel that the battery life on this phone is very average I was expecting it to be Expecting the wrong word. I was hoping for it to be longer because it’s a new phone new technology new SOC But I found it very similar to the Pixel 2XL from last year I’m ending the day with like 20 to maybe 40% battery life depending what I was doing It’s not disappointing, but I was hoping for better now the display on this phone is excellent the display in both These phones was really good. I would say that the Pixel 3XL display is better, higher resolution, but that notch though I just I couldn’t deal with it I know there was software to pull it down and kind of hide it but it never looked quite right to me That notch was so deep. The Pixel 3 screen is more symmetrical and despite the bigger forehead and chin It just looks more appropriate to me and I guess somewhere tolerant of a top and bottom bezel Then a notch. Now I was a little bit worried about the resolution Like I haven’t used a 1080p screen for a while, but it’s really sharp. It’s an excellent screen Both of these are running Snapdragon 845s or both great performers but the Pixel 3XL definitely has better thermal management when I was running 3DMark repeatedly on these phones the Pixel 3 was dropping a score pretty quickly after even the second run the Pixel 3XL was able to maintain its core a little bit better This is not something that most people are going to care about but if you’re gonna buy these phones and you plan on playing games On it. I would definitely pick up the XL instead of the regular three They’re both not clocked at the highest like they’re both at 2.5 gigahertz. I think instead of their standard 2.8 So these are not great gaming phones either way, but performance for regular stuff kick-ass. Ok RAM management is the last thing I want to talk about and this is something that kind of bugs me about these phones So these both ship with 4 gigs of RAM, which in 2018 is a very small amount of RAM There are flagships out there competitors that are shipping with like 8 Some phones are coming out with 10 gigs of RAM like the Black Shark but 4 gigs of RAM on a flagship phone feels Anemic for 2018 and I’m getting app closures when I’m running four or five apps Which is really bad particularly with music streaming apps when you look at companies like oneplus and they’re sticking eight gigs of ram into phones That are six hundred bucks It just makes a phone like this feel out of place and I get it like when it comes to phone manufacturing sometimes it’s easier and even cheaper to just Stuff phones with RAM and not have to deal with memory manager and software like it takes time and effort and like just a lot Of work to make a phone like this utilize four gigs of ram efficiently It can be done and Google’s a software company if there’s one company that can do it. Well, it’s Google It’s just that right. Now. This feels really half-baked. This phone should be able to use four gigs of RAM better but that being said I still think they should have put more memory in here because when you have competitors that are putting in Double the amount of memory for cheaper price. It’s just a bad look. So are these phones good? Are they worth your money now? I’m someone who really values the whole pure or stock Android experience I know it’s something that a lot of people don’t care about but it’s something that I personally enjoy so for me it is worth The premium to get that Google experience with the amazing Pixel camera so that camera you’ve probably seen tons of videos on it already, is an amazing camera It’s very good at capturing light data. It’s powerful. Its nightsight is good The top shot feature is so useful when you have a kid and you want to get him in a good photo like this photo Would have been very difficult to get without top shot that smile on his face lasted a split second This is actually one of my favorite photos of him and without top shot. I probably wouldn’t been able to catch it the one thing I don’t like about the camera system on this phone is that the microphone is Really poor a lot of camera phones don’t have great mics again with this one sticks out as being really bad but all the things that I don’t love about this phone are relatively insignificant to me now if you’re someone that really cares about microphone Quality and you want fast charging from your wireless charger and all that stuff. There are things that are not perfect But this phone obviously, but for most people if you’re willing to pay that steeper price with that Google experience in that Pixel camera I think it’s a great phone this year. Ok. Hope you guys enjoyed this video thumbs If you liked it, subs if you loved to see you guys next time.

  • Very impressed with the Pixels this year. Especially the camera. Thanks for watching!

  • Can you do a quick update on the phone to address whether it's gotten better

  • Honestly I'd say it's worth if you value a camera and get it at some kind of sale.

  • Forced gesture nav is anti-consumer

  • Just buy a Chinese Android One phone and save some money.

  • Thanks for the review and comparisons!

  • Can you tell me why are you so cool

  • Those notches just ruin everything. I'm digging the XL except for that notch.

  • What's that app seeing the charging conditions

  • I love my pixel 3… Was going to pick up the iPhone XR and decided to try something different and I'm in love with this phone

  • Very good review 🙂

  • Dave, I would like to see a long term use video review now that a lot of issues have been fixed. I would love to hear what you think of the phone how it is now! 😀

  • Thanks for the nice and professional like review.

  • Which tv is in the background?

  • Average BL and no jack makes this a no-go for me

  • What about the SoT?

  • I like watching reviews of stuff I already have. I'm like " yeah I agree"

  • I wish the would go back to selling good phones for less then $200…

  • Loved your video

  • I regret getting it. if I could ask for a refund I'll ask for one right now

  • What is better? Google pixel 3 xl or Google pixel 3?

  • High quality videos💯 not screaming around and explains everything

  • I'm getting the pixel 3 not the xl cause the notch sucks

  • Anyone else just onboard for the dual stereo speakers? I just bought the pixel 3xl because I knew about the better screen, but, maybe I should reconsider the regular pixel 3 for the better sound?

  • why am i not on the list? 😆

  • Is there a way for whites on the Pixel to actually look white? The screen is very dim, and whites feel off. YouTube, Pitchfork, Google, every white backdrop looked…dark.

  • Always the best reviews. To the point, no wasted time. Common sense. Trusted.

  • they think that they can do better with limited hardware resources, camera and Ram…really?

  • Yes, stock Android!

  • that chilled cow

  • Pixel 3 piece of junk not worth the money. Some widgets don't work or update automatic. Like weather app, MLB , and ESPN app. Have not try others. After 3 months its not charging. Never had problems with my cheap Androids phone . All the apps work and updated automatic. Don't buy the PIXEL 3. Worth less than 100 dollars

  • Just wondering did Google pay you to do this video ?

  • The backs don't "scratch easily." They get marks, but they're easily rubbed off with a fingertip or wet paper towel.

  • where can i get those tube lights in the background?!

  • That was a clean review. Thumbs up (y)

  • Better Mic, more RAM & a nicer screen & this is worth the price. Unfortunately the mic is so bad I couldn't recommend it to anyone

  • I want the pixel camera with the one plus 6t specs

  • I love that Lo-fi YouTube channel!

  • I just subbed coz you sound cool

  • Everyone is complaining about the mic quality and i did a recording using filmic pro set to the phone mic and it sounded crystal clear literally nothing wrong maybe it was a software update

  • Just ordered one. Its on sale!

  • Repping that Chilled Cow! Love it. (That's the girl with headphones. It's LoFi music highly recommend for chill music background or easy listening)

  • Not worth the 💰money!
    Period. 1 🔈speaker is quiter!!!

  • where can i find the wallpaper in mac behind?

  • EWWWW tell google we don't want notches!!!!

  • Can anyone please link me that wallpaper, it looks so awesome

  • Ugly… Ugly, UGLY

  • My Pixel 3XL won't play music or access some apps right away. It usually says "For that, you need to unlock your phone." Are the configs for the Pixel Stand different?

  • i see that inner raptor fan >.<

  • The 2xl speakers are fuller and louder, ive had both.
Plus the 2xl is smoother on the latest update, not sure why the software is so badly optimised , last gen pixel performs better with camera as good too haha

  • Bad microphone, buggy software, laggy experience, camera the same, screen better yes is that worth the upgrade NO!

  • great vid but to much complaning

  • Pixel 3 was so frustrating to use and had hardware issues on my initial phone and my replacement from Google, which was another brand new one, so I dumped it and got a oneplus 6t

  • Please post the wallpaper on the phones 🙂

  • Hey just wanted to ask if youd still recommend the phone to someone who lives in a hotter country such as Cyprus, where its mostly hot throughout the year. Just wandering after what you said about the heat management.
    Please reply! 🙂

  • Nice, no frills review, to the point.

  • I would not recommend a Pixel phone. I bought a brand new Pixel 3 XL in March 2019 with a clear defect. Google support took me for an endless ride, 3 month later I got zero progress (More info here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xv9c6AvVxl8). I am stuck with the phone, it will probably end up in the bin soon. If your Pixel works, great. However if you have any issues, good luck with Google's dreadful support. I would rather get a Samsung Galaxy S10 or even OnePlus 7 Pro. Over the years I had Nexus 4 and 5, although they worked great for a while I could accept the lack of reliability like quick battery degradation as those were mid range phones. Now Google is trying to play with the big boys, clearly they've managed to pull it off when it comes to the spec/numbers. Looking closer, when it comes to design or reliability they comes no-where near an iPhone or Samsung (BTW I own a Galaxy S9+ now and S7 before that, outstanding phones!)

  • If you see this Dave,
image link for the dope wallpaper in the background?

  • Google isn't really making something very effective, aren't they? They need to learn to either make their RAM management like Apple, or offer something which is at least a bit more aesthetic for charging that price.

  • Chilled cow video playing when talking abt the speakers…. You know good vibe beats bro

  • Ffs..
    Stop speaking so fast !

  • Hey you have the same fanteks case in the background as I have at home 🙂 Mine is the tempered glass version and it is BEAUTIFUL. You have good taste in PC cases 🙂 And about the phone, I love this phone. Honestly i have had some issues but I am able to overlook them because the phone just does what I want it to do so well. I'm a pro photographer and don't have the space in my bag to carry a lo when I am traveling. Having something with dynamic range THIS good along with the ability to shoot raw and touch up in lightroom later is such a big plus. It means I can go out with my wife in between projects and just take my phone, and know I am going to get a good picture every time. Keep up the great videos Dave!

  • Congrats dave toronto win the finals 😀

  • Raptors shirt 😏

  • We need that jacket!

  • Belkin has 10 watts

  • How do you check the watts? My battery app stopped snowing charge rate 🙁 3W?

  • Hauwei P10 and Samsung phones have really great mics and codecs

  • 3:26 wallpaper?

  • Used the wrong thumbnail.

  • "why am I not on that list" lmao rip

  • My phone has 1GB ram 😝😝😂😂😂

  • Why is there no head phone jack🤬😤😤😰💦👎

  • Tech youtuber puts his/her sim card in the phone.

    Me: purchases tye phone

  • Was thinking about the Pixel 3 because of the camera and pure Android. But the Galaxy S10 just had too many features to pass up. And the camera is very good.

  • Watching 3 minutes into the video there was only criticism… Although honest criticism is needed in a review was hoping for more discussing on what is good about the phone.

  • Wow that microphone though.. I'm glad that I picked S10+ instead 😂

  • “Hey, we don’t have a notch. We’re so cool, not following the trend!”

  • This video convinced me to go for the pixel 3 over 3xl or 2xl. I live this honest reviews. Even if i read around 10 articles I always learn something new here. Great job.

  • I just got my Pixel 3 yesterday and it is AMAZING! Beautiful design and has stock Android. I couldn't be happier. I thought about getting the Pixel 3 XL but that notch is just annoying and doesn't have the same size front facing speakers like the Pixel 3 does. I also thought about getting the Pixel 3a but for $100 extra the Pixel 3 has better speakers, better build quality and a better processor. I searched and reviewed lots of phones and the Pixel 3 for $499 is the best phone you can get in this price range. The price will probably drop again when the Pixel 4 is released on October. I had no desire to get the Samsung 10 only because their software updates are incredibly slow. Software updates on Google phones are instant and they release them a lot with huge UI improvements. I feel like I am getting a new phone every month or so.

  • Maybe your left ear is broken rather than the speakers

  • worth it for $500?

  • That lofi girl still studying

  • This device has not dated well. Plenty of bugs/crashes with only 4gb RAM and horrendous battery life. Even more disappointing that the Pixel 4 will have less…

Google, wtf are y'all doing with all your $?

  • I loved the Dad moment!

  • everyone saying that it's crap bc it's "only" got 4 gb of ram, but nobody complains (any where near as a much at least) when apple releases a $1500 phone with 4gb of ram ???????

  • That hiss on the vid you shot w/ the cam is the same hiss I have on the 2. Total shit!

  • What a sad looking smartphone, I'd rather buy a Xiaomi Redmi note 8

  • I am very disappointed with the google pixel 3 phone AND google services. Google dropped the ball multiple times in their customer service and did not compensate for their mistakes in any way besides “I sincerely apologize.”

I decided to not get a warranty from Best Buy where I bought the phone because google offered a 1 yr manufacturing warranty. This was a big mistake.

I bought the google pixel 3 because of the camera. The camera broke, which apparently is a problem for this phone (according to what I found online). First step to try and fix the phone is reformatting.

I needed a google assistant to walk me through the steps to back up my material and reformat the phone. I asked the assistant 3 times if my photo and recordings were backed up (I confirmed this by looking at the transcripts of our conversation). She checked and confirmed that all was backed up. However, all of my recordings were lost. This set me back quite a bit with my work. Google ‘sincerely apologized’ (there wasn’t much else they could do with this one. And this same response was given when I felt there were other alternatives to fix their mistakes).

The camera wasn’t fixed so I had to send my phone in and they would send a new one back to me. This means going without a phone for 2-3 weeks weeks.

Within a month of receiving the “new” phone, the battery dies completely by noon (4-5 working hours). I question if I had received a new phone or a refurbished phone? The phone that I sent in because of a broken camera battery lasted much longer and it was several months old. Also the finger print sensor was significantly less sensitive than the first pixel 3 phone I had (another reason why I think they may have sent me a refurbished phone).

I now had to send the phone in again, go another 2-3 weeks without a phone. I was very disappointed with this product as it was said to be one of the better phones on the market and it wasn’t cheap. I requested a refund instead of another draw out exchange for a ‘new’ phone.

I was told I would hear back from someone within 5 days. It took them 3 weeks to get back to me. And all I received was an email saying please call us. I called 6 more times until we finally arrived to unfavorable and disappointing answer. Each representative that I talked to said they would look into the issue and get back to me. Some promised to call me back within the hour, others the next day, some said in 1-3 days. No one ever got back to me so I had to continue to call and share my process all over again. On the 4th and 5th call, I asked to stay on the line while they looked into it since the previous representatives didn’t get back to me. Each time they assured me they would personally take are of it and promised to get back to me. I am a trusting person and so went along. The google assistants were very nice; however, they all lacked follow through. This process went on for another 2 weeks and hours and hours on the phone with google.

Each time I had told them that I am leaving the country right after christmas and thus am running out of time to send the phone in to get a ‘new’ one.

They finally gave me an answer saying that their policy does not allow exchanges and cannot help me in getting a phone faster than within their 2-3 weeks exchange rate. It took me 6 weeks to get to this answer and I am now out of time because of leaving the country to get a replacement. All of this is clearly documented and recorded and they were not willing to compensate for their multiple mistakes in any way. They would just say. “I sincerely apologize.”

I do not recommend this phone or anything that will require you to rely upon google services.

  • PLEASE…CALM…DOWN👍

  • 4 gigs of RAM in 2019 too with pixel 4

  • I’m really like your jacket. Where did you buy it.? 😂
