Sony a6400 Review – The Best APS-C Camera So Far

– [Dave VO] Thank you
Storyblocks for making this video possible. – What cookin everybody, Dave Maze here with Kinotika. We’re in
Hawaii talking about the new a6400. (electronic music) Connor and I were fortunate
enough to be invited by Sony to this private
event at this amazing tropical island. I got this lei here, aloha from Hawaii. The only tropical island in America. – That’s the fact, Jack! – [Dave] So Sony has
given us this new a6400 for the day and we’re going to be doing as many tests as we can. We did ask you guys to give
us comments on what you want to see so we’re gonna try to address all those questions that you
have about the new a6400. The Sony a6400 comes in a $898, body only and it’s sporting the
same 24.2 megapixel sensor that’s in the previous
a6300 and a6500 cameras. The big difference,
however, is a totally new color science with the 6400. In addition to improved color science which we will talk about
later, is an improvement of the battery life. Even though this camera is
using the same batteries that we’re used to with the 63 and 6500. It’s actually much better on this camera and that is a welcomed addition. Something new that Sony is really boasting is the new processor inside of the 6400. The bions x, or bion… I don’t know. We’re gonna put it right here. That’s what it is, it’s a new processor. It allows for AI of the
autofocus system on this camera. Which is insane, the AI
technology of this camera is actually able to ascertain what a human face and a human body is. In addition to human tracking,
it’s actually able to track animal’s faces, which
is great for wildlife photographers especially. There’s 425 phase detect
and contrast detect autofocus points on this camera. And the autofocus performance on the 6400 is really where this thing shines. It’s greatly improved
from the 63 and 6500s. And even the a7iii, which will hopefully be getting a firmware update soon. There’s a lot more to talk about this camera for photo and video. But before we get to that,
let’s hear a word from our sponsor today, Storyblocks. – [Dave VO] Often when
making videos you find yourself low on footage. Sometimes things just didn’t
turn out the way you want it. You didn’t get the b-roll you needed and it would waste way too
much of your time and money to go back and reshoot stuff. That is where Storyblocks comes in. With their amazing stock
footage, you are able to make people believe you’re in Hawaii
without ever going there. Most stock footage sites
charge an arm and a leg per clip you use, but with Storyblocks you can just pay a base subscription and download all the videos you want. If you want to see this for yourself then click the first link
down below in the description. Thank you Storyblocks for
making this video possible. – [Dave] The video performance
on this camera’s really great but it also takes photos so let’s briefly talk about the photography
features of this camera. Like I said earlier this
is sharing the same sensor from the previous cameras. But with the new processing
and the color science you’re getting much better results. Unfortunately, Lightroom and
Photoshop haven’t updated to allow us to view the raw
images so every image that you’re seeing here was taken in JPEG. But you can see that
improved color science. The tracking autofocus
on the 6400 is amazing especially with the eye
detect feature turned on. When you’re taking portraits
of people the eyeball is actually where you want
your focus point to be especially when you’re
shooting at a really shallow depth of field. So having the ability to
track your eye using the AI assisted autofocus on
the 6400 is fantastic. The a6400 shares the same
EVF that we’ve seen in the previous models with a
2.36 million dot OLED EVF. With the 6400 we also get
this cute little flash here. It’s not very good, it’s
the same one that we’ve seen with the older cameras,
it’s there, it works. But you’re not gonna be winning a Pulitzer for photography using this flash. Sony is really marketing this
camera as a vlogging camera but having the flip-up display
is really great for selfies. – But first, let me take a selfie. (🎵 “#SELFIE” – The Chainsmokers🎵) – In fact, in a way, I
would actually say this is a better camera for photos,
especially if you are taking selfies… because this
camera doesn’t have IBIS it’s not the best for video
because of the rolling shutter. Which leads me to video. Unfortunately, this camera does not have stabilization on the sensor. It’s one of the things that I really wish I could add to this camera
because it desperately needs it. The a6500, which is an older
camera, actually already has stabilization on the sensor. And you really need this
stabilization because the rolling shutter on this camera is awful! It is so, so bad when you’re
shooting 4K in particular. When you switch over to 1080p however the rolling shutter is
much more manageable. The problem with this camera
is the fact they’re marketing it as a vlogging camera that can shoot 4K because of that flip-up display. It’s a welcome addition to
have the flip-up display but because the 4K
rolling shutter is so bad when you are actually
vlogging with this camera everything behind you is
just jiggling and wiggling like crazy, that might
be me being a little bit too nitpicky but, hey I’m nitpicky. This is a review channel,
I’m gonna be nitpicky. The 4K image quality on
the 6400 is amazing because of the 6K to 4K down res
that this camera can do. There’s nothing new here with that. The a6300 and the a6500 both
did the exact same thing. But again, with the improved color science it’s even better than before. Having amazing 4K image
quality is one thing but if the image is out of focus then you’re completely screwed. That’s where this camera crushes it again with the AI assisted autofocus. – [Iron Man] JARVIS, you there? – [JARVIS] At your service, sir. – [Dave] The autofocus
system in this camera is so good it’s actually
competing really closely to the Canon Dual Pixel autofocus that has been the king of
video autofocus for so long. If you would like to see a
comparison of the autofocus system then check out
our video that we did in the icon above or
the description below. When you look at the a6300 and a6500 cameras the autofocus system was
very good but it was lacking something that I desperately wanted that is autofocus tracking modes. And this camera finally has it. Not only can you track
subject automatically but you can use the touch screen to select exactly what you want to be in focus. And the camera uses that AI technology to track your subject. In addition to the touch
ability and the tracking we also have a very natural
autofocus look with video. It’s smooth and doesn’t create
any weird jittery effects. Another area where the a6400
really excels is actually in live streaming, having
the flip-up display alone is a huge advantage
but in addition to that we also have the ability
to get a clean HDMI out. And that’s obviously what you want when you’re doing a live stream. The other thing that makes
this camera great for live streaming is the fact
that you can take a USB micro cable and plug it
straight into the USB port and power it using that USB. Another feature that I
think is real important for video shooters is
the fact that this camera has no record limit. An unlimited record time is
great, but what if the camera overheats like the 63 and 6500s? Well that’s no problem
anymore, with the a6400 we’re not seeing any overheating
issues with this camera. Sony finally put timelapse
back into their cameras. Which is really weird
cause the older cameras you were able to have timelapse
using the play memory store but it’s really nice to
see that they’ve added timpelapse back to the camera. When it comes to frame rates
on the a6400 not much has changed from the previous models. We get the ability to shoot 4K at 24 and 30 frames per second. With the 30 frame per
second mode in particular having a slight crop to that image. Unfortunately there’s
no 4K 60p on this camera. Hopefully with a newer a7000
which is rumored to come out we’ll see a 4K 60fps on
a camera of this size. As soon as you switch over
to 1080p you get much more flexibility with the frame rates. You can shoot 24, 30,
and 60 frames per second with the 1080p 60fps
mode looking really good. And for slow motion we
have the ability to shoot up to 120 frames per second in 1080p. Some cameras when you
switch to 120p have some issues with autofocus or they
just remove it completely this camera has the
ability to do autofocus but it’s not the same
tracking that we’re used to with the main video modes. You’re basically able to touch the screen and spot focus on certain
things, and then it kind of just stays locked. And that’s kind of a shame. Like I mentioned earlier,
this camera also has a clean HDMI out, and that HDMI out
is also giving us the ability to record ProRes using an
Atomos recorder for example. In addition to all the
other things I’ve listed this camera also give us the
new HLG profile on the a6400. What do you think about this thing, Levi is it a legitimate vlogging setup? What do you think, it
looks nice, look at that. [Levi] If I was just getting started on YouTube this is probably the
camera that I would use and also recommend for others. – Yeah. – It feels like most of the
camera on the market right now are either good at autofocus,
or good seeing what you’re filming. – Yeah. – And this is kind of the first
one, in the sub $1000 market that does both. – Yep, it’s got 4K! – 4K, you can see your image
so you can actually make sure you’re recording. – Yep. – You can make great images
with the current mirrorless cameras that don’t have
flip screens. – It’s true. – But it’s an extra level of
work and some of your stuff just turns out like crap
or you weren’t recording. – Yeah, and by the way guys,
we are actually in a humider right now, going up a
mountain with Levi Allen. This is, this is a dream come true. (dramatic music) So I was really looking
forward to getting some dinner but then Levi had to be
all cinematographer and get some shots here in the dirt. I’m hungry, I’m angry.
[Levi] Food is for the weak! So that about does it with
our first look at the new Sony a6400, I’m really excited about it. Thank you Sony, for bringing
us here to fabulous Hawaii we’re on Honolulu,
unbelievable experience here with a bunch of… – Dave. – What? – We’re not in Hawaii. We’re in California, you can literally see Long Beach right there. – But I got leid. – No, no you, I saw you carry that in your bag. – Anyways guys, hope
you enjoyed this video. If you love Levi Allen, subscribe
to his channel link below and yeah. – Leave a
comment in the description. – Give us a thumbs up,
subscribe, enable the bell notification, once
again I’m Dave Maze. This is Levi Allen, see you next time. We hope you guys enjoyed this video. If you didn’t realize
this actually was shot over a period of time,
we’re not in Hawaii. We’re not even in Catalina,
in fact you can maybe even see Catalina behind me here. We’re in Laguna, we only
had like two or three hours at Catalina with the Sony
event, so we weren’t able to shoot our full review,
this is our full review. I hope you enjoyed it, make
sure you’re subscribed. Bye, alright there you go.

  • I can't believe you changed your name. I just got good at pronouncing your real name, and I've been practicing!

  • Is this Hawaii bit cause canon didn't invite you to that event? Maybe next time, even camera conspiracies gives you shout outs.

  • Dave maize !!!!

  • So unless you splurge for the cage it's choice between flip up monitor or external mic but not both

  • Thanks for the review. Which rig did you use on 1.34 minute?

  • 🤣 the way you said Dave Maze

  • A+++ for extra effort! Neat video.

  • would the stabilization and rolling shutter for the a6400 improve if you use a gimbal??

  • 3:57 best part of the video.

  • You guys are actually doing what others refer to as "killing it"

  • Aloha from Hawaii the only tropical island in America!

  • All these paid trips (by Sony) to check out the Sony A6400, no wonder that most all the reviews are almost all positive. (maybe rightly so). I'm looking to upgrade my A6000 . I think I'll hold judgement on the A6400 till it's been out awhile and see what the "real world reviews" have to say. Can't decide between the A6500 (w/ibis) or this new camera. I know a new A6xxx or A7xxx APS-C body will be out in the not too distant future to replace the A6500 but I'm quite sure the price will go beyond what I'm willing to pay for an APS-C camera.

  • M50 or A6400. Just for photography and little bit video. What would you recommend?

  • Enjoyed this review! Hope you are reviewing the Canon EOS RP. Keep up the great work👍🏾

  • Thanks kinotika by watching your review videos i got an help and I bought canon m50

  • Bought the a6400 and currently on vacation with it. Use it mostly for photos and sometimes video on a tripod. Autofocus is insanely good. 400 photos and 10min 4k video took 50% battery. I love it! For my vlog needs i stick to my gopro hero 7. Fully agree with your review.

  • Great video Dave!! You may need to change up that intro now since you switched up the moniker! Great video though … seriously thinking about switching from my M50 to this

  • would rolling shutter be mitigated on a gimbal?

  • omg living in California I kept wondering through the video, "Aren't they at Catalina Island?!?"

  • Dude you are so funny. I love this current batch of camera reviewers coming up. You, Kasey (sp?), and Gerald all have great info with great info and humor. I love it.

Now if you'll excuse me…I have to go take a selfie.

  • Amazing video 🤙🏼 I don't really care about Sony stuff, but you guys are the best. The mix of humor and professionalism 👌🏼

  • why are people complaining about rolling shutter? its literally a click-of-a-button fix on final cut pro … lol.

  • Nice review , nice camera . But which camera did you use to shoot this video ? It seems to be out of focus very often. If it a6400 I'm a little bit disapointed

  • ehhh… just put it on a zhiyun crane-m instead of a big ass gorilla pod, its about the same weight but 10x more stable than IBIS
    (A6400+Gimbal = Same Price as A6500)

  • Comment.
    There I left it.

  • I have the camera on pre order and recently sold my a6300 to get this. However smallrig tells me that my old 6300 cage will not fit the 6400 and you are using my exact cage in this video. Can you confirm which smallrig cage you are using in this video? It is NOT the new one they have for the 6400 correct?? Great stuff btw. I found you from the other youtubers who were at Catalina.

  • This versus the Fujifilm xt30 is something that has to happen soon. Also G7 G7

  • Great quality video & good info!

  • It not the only tropical island in America but great video lol 😰😅😅😅

  • How do you have the mic mounted to the side?

  • You got my like just for the selfie shoot.

  • Good video

  • Love your approach. 😉 Really something different, than what others do (that thing with Hawaii maked me laughed) – because you will see same things in 20 other videos, so it's good, that you have your own style…

Anyway, A6400 is ssomewhere in a DHL van right now, I am excited to see how does it work. 😉

  • What do you mean you can’t view the raw images in Lightroom/photoshop? Sorry for my ignorance

  • Better than Canon EOS RP?

  • You Dave "Altizer" Maze, I loved the review except the fact that you guys have done nothing for that infamous intro music.🤣

  • But ur video quality is looking trash on my screen at 1080p, why? Maybe CODEC?

  • i can see how much effort you put into your videos man and they're great! Keep it up man sml <3

  • Nice review👍 plz tell me that this camera has a full touchscreen or this touch function is for only focusing and tracking ??

  • I hate the elitist tone behind the "if i was just starting out" like what does that mean? Why would this be good for when you're starting out but not when you've been doing it awhile?

  • i don't care much for ibis i don't vlog. selfie screen with the autofocus and color science won me over

  • Where did you buy the L bracket?

  • If U're having a6300 its not worth it for an upgrade unless U're rich

  • "The only tropical island in America?" I think you forgot Puerto Rico, St. Thomas. That Is a Fact!

  • Loving the fun reviews , Hawaiian shirt + lei style = tropical selfies game on point A+

  • At first, I thought that Sony was very apologetic about not inviting you to that San Diego unveiling…haha.

  • Cameras need to become like phones already…

  • It's okay, you can vlog on FHD, nobody needs seeing that face in 4K… 😀

  • Almost great if it has Ibis, or atleast digital movie IS (like canon). 4k Rolling shutter and jitters have been my problem with a6500, i only do 4k on a tripod or gimbal otherwise footage is wasted. Next issue is the lens- the 10-18 vlogging lens has a weak stabilization. Bigger lenses 18-105/135 are more stable but bulkier. Counting the portability and stabilization, i think m50 ( or even the g7xii) is still the better choice. On another note, im seeing a lot of Potato jet influence and style in this video, but otherwise a great entertaining review

  • Guys, I am trying to add a comment on the description and it is not working… PLEASE HELP!!!

  • How does IBIS fix rolling shutter? For what I know rolling shutter is due to sensor read out speed, right?

  • STILL concerned about the FULL HD quality on these cameras?

The famous full HD "issue", with the 6300/6500…

What if I tell you that there is a hidden setting, which Sony set it to "Auto" (actually, why did they even make such a setting, it is stupid to me), and you can turn it "off", so to say, and see that the footage is A LOT CLEARER and SHARPER?

Just found out about it – myself -, while testing modes on my freshly bought 6300.

  • [ 📢 EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ] A6400 is much more better camera than A6300 & A6500 because:

    1. No 30 minutes record limit: A6300 &A6500 will not get this update do the old tax issue,

    2. No overheat (better image processor) like A6300/A6500,

    3. Longer battery life up to 1 hour 30 minutes,

    4. Image process from A9 = amazing fast AF better than A6300/A6500,

    A6400 – 425 points (phase-detection AF) / 425 points (contrast-detection AF)

    A6300/A6500 – 425 points (phase-detection AF) / 169 points (contrast-detection AF)

    5. TIME LAPSE build in,

    6. Full Flip Screen,

    7. A6500 has got IBIS but in video in motion is very bad – you need gimbal and without it you get better price for A6400 $899 (A6400 + gimbal = a bit more than A6500 price),

    8. New Hight Dynamic Range picture profile,

    9. 2 New AF engines that are only in A6400 – old cameras don't have this (you need this new image processor),

    10. Better build in microphone at the front – it offer very nice audio if you are not in wind area,

    11. Support for higher iSO,

    12. During recording screen doesn't dim.

Summarizing: A6400 is better than A6300/A6500 in everthing 😊

  • Puerto Rico? US Virgin islands? Lmao

  • I am seriously considering getting this Camera for its super fast and rock solid Autofocus that will be a huge improvement and could have many uses where my main camera (Panasonic GH5) falls short. But the rolling shutter is really bad and handheld it looks really shakey even with lenses with OSS. Now I do own a bunch of gimbals in various sizes so I'm thinking, after watching most of the main vlogger's footage, that this Camera would be awesome but ONLY IF YOU PUT IT ON A GIMBAL. Most of the straight handheld footage looked pretty shaky and jello-like and that was probably the best footage that the vloggers could edit together. I'm sure the worst footage was left on the editing room floor. All the main Vloggers that were paid by Sony (hotels and food and activities) and were probably afraid to be too critical on the camera's issues (flip up screen blocked by the shotgun mic, No IBIS, Bad rolling shutter). I get that. You are flown all the way across the country by Sony and wined and dined. Subconsciously you really want to like the camera. Not having IBIS is not a deal breaker if you plan to regularly use it on a smaller gimbal. But it kept being touted as the perfect camera for someone just getting into Youtube or Vlogging. Sure in a pinch this could be a new vlogger's only camera. But expect shakey, jello-like footage. For someone like me that has gimbals, the Autofocus may be a good enough reason to buy BUT if this is someone's only camera they have to factor in the extra cost of a lot of extra stuff they will need to buy to put out decent content. The vloggers that were given this camera to test kept saying. "It is only $900!" which is not really true. Yes, it is $900 but with no lenses and no way to stabilize it and no way to get good audio in outdoor (breezy) conditions. The OSS of all the Sony lenses used in the various footage did not do a good job smoothing handheld footage IMO. Unless you only shoot indoors, a Shotgun mic (with a dead cat) and a bracket to move the shotgun mic to the side is a must. Add Lenses, Shotgun Mic, brackets to move the Mic and a gimbal to stop the footage from looking like shakey Jello and now your $900 camera is $2,000+ easy. So not such a screaming deal for a new vlogger. A new vlogger could just use their existing iPhone (stabilized 4K footage) with a Rode Micro Me L shotgun mic and get smoother footage and good audio.

  • You can actually win a any camera that you use to capture images even if it's a cell phone

  • should i wait for the a7000? or get this a6400? or just get a a7iii? or wait for the a7siii? i cant tell!?!?

  • It's not because once again Sony is behind on 4k.. Lots of cameras, none have 4k 60fps..of it costs like $3-4,000

  • I wanna buy this weak, but i need see my RAW files… that's insane.

  • 6:59 what is the brand of that cage?

  • Hi Tim, this Linda. Sorry to bother you here. I sent you several emails, but never got any feedback from your side. Could you please help to check? Thank you.

  • Thank God for Canon.

  • U dont look like ur fealing ok in that hammer

  • This is a terrible "review"

  • Is there anything that you know of (EXCEPT FOR IBIS) that the Sony A6500 has that the A6400 doesn't bring to the table? In other words, is there any other reason besides the aforementioned IBIS that would convince a photographer to purchase the A6500 over the A6400…

  • very nice video!!!!! I love it

  • Why Sony couldn't just flip the screen to the side. Then someone could put a mic on the top. How hard is that…..

  • What is that cold shoe you have on your rig called? That thing looks awesome

  • What mic do you use on the camera? Because for now I’ve only heard people complaining that the flip up screen is annoying for the mic, but yours is on the side

  • No offence I mean this, but it's so weird a video that's been made possible by Sony inviting you out to Hawaii to review a camera that you will mostly likely NOT throw under the bus if you want to get invited back again next time…AND its sponsored by Story blocks……it's like a commercial within a commercial.

I understand you need to make a living at this, but I just find it weird. That said, nice camera.

  • Bought Good Good camera !!!
Sony a6400 kit now only $998

  • Sony using my friends name on this camera, in indonesian language, Sony, Alfa, Anam, Robby, Ompu, ratu,

  • I subscribe your chenel you subscribe my chenel

  • Hey what microphone are u using for the camera the fury one?

  • Does anyone know what mic he were using?? Plz help

  • What gimbal did you use with it?

  • Send me one sir

  • Sad that a new camera in 2019 does not have a USB C port!

  • Which camera you use to shoot this video? Amazing quality.

  • Would you still recommend Canon m6 if it's under 400usd? P.s great review, Keep up the good work.

  • Looking to shoot my own music videos. Would you suggest this camera?

  • Hi, pls Help…

I want to buy any battery grip for sony a6400…

Which battery grip should I buy for the sony a6400?

  • Great vlog. I do however totally disagree with the importance of ibis for video. I own the a7iii and the ibis barely makes a difference for video. At least for quality footage anyways. Anytime you need stuff to look really smooth, you need a gimbal or some other stable platform. Still, great review!

  • I 100% agree with you about that, say it with me now "THAT HORRIBLE, TERRIBLE, AWFUL, STUPID ROLLING SHUTTER"!

  • Can you do a comparison between the A6400 and A7III?

  • How does a review become "official" as opposed to"unofficial"?

  • what mic are you using for the a6400?

  • But does the stability matter if you have it in a desk or something and use it to film yourself?

  • Wht do u mean lr haven’t update for the raw images?

  • So this would be a good camera if I shoot video in a studio? hmmmm

  • On video, you can add stabilization, it's called a gimbal. Walking around thinking ibis or lens IS will make smooth videos is delusional.

  • Puerto Rico ? Lol

  • Put it on a webill problem solved

  • The Sony A6400 really, really rocks. I use it for Wildlife on an adapted (via Sigma MC-11) Canon 400mm 2.8 III. The Autofocus (acquisition, tracking) is top notch, it's amazingly fast, not just for an adapted lens, it's super fast in general even compared to native solutions. Wow. Well done, Sony. Well done!

  • Dave when you say the AF stays locked in 120fps if you touch focus do you mean it stays on the same focal plane. Is there a way for it to tack a subject or object.

  • Wait, why does everyone say the tracking feature is new? It was there since the a6000. It's improved, yes but, new? No.

  • what about Fuji

  • Is it a good camera for photography ?
